WEDNESDAY’S “NEWS OF THE WEEK IN REVIEW”

The More Opposition Trump Faces, the More Popular He Becomes, and He Knows It:  Damon Linker, NY Times, June 8, 2023

“Hard as it may be for some of us to believe, Mr. Trump’s indictment by the special counsel on. federal charges could well bolster him further. . . one narrowly political (not to say cynical) [possibility] sees Mr. Trump benefitting in the G.O.P. primaries as a good thing because the former president appears to be the most beatable alternative for Mr. Biden to face in the fall of 2024, and that will be even truer when Mr. Trump is embroiled in a federal trial on major criminal charges and facing possible prison time. Whqt’s good for Mr. Trump in the primaries, in other words, will be terrible for him in the general election. .
. .
[Yet] there’s no reason at all to suppose the prospect of Mr. Trump’s ending up a convicted criminal would disrupt [his popularity among his followers]. On the contrary, it’s far more likely to transform him into something resembling a martyr to millions of Americans—and in the process to wrest those devoted supporters free from attachment to the rule of law altogether..
How politically radical could the base of the Republican Party become between now and the 2024 presidential election? There’s really no way to know. We are heading into uncharted and turbulent waters.

Biden’s 2024 Pitch Highlights Pragmatism over Trump’s Pugilism Zeke Miller, AP, June 4, 2023“While the rest of us are sweating the micro-news cycle and who’s up and who’s down on Twitter, the president is playing the long game. He ran for the presidency pledging to restore functionality to Washington after his predecessor, and it’s hard to argue with his record doing so. He’s proven he can rack up significant Democratic wins while also working in good faith with the other side.”

“Iran is openly committed to destroying, repeating the Holocaust and destroying the six or seven million Jews of Israel and we’re not going to sit by, idly by and let them do it. (If) these Ayatollahs think that they could threaten us with a nuclear holocaust they’re wrong. We will do whatever we need to do to defend ourselves.” – Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu to Sky News.  Regarding the possibility of normalized relations between Israel and Saudi Arabia, Netanyahu commented that ”Our hand is extended to all Arab States and certainly to Saudi Arabia which is vitally important. We have great opportunities to advance the peace in our region, peace between our two countries, the well-being of our peoples. I think it would change history.” (United With Israel, June 11, 2023)

In its waning weeks, the Trump administration transferred Israel from the U.S. military’s European Command to its Central Command, which is responsible for the Middle East. That decision responded to the Abraham Accords and Israel’s new, open relationships with several Arab states. It was a “brilliant decision,” Dana Stroul, U.S. deputy assistant secretary of defense for the Middle East, told JNS in a recent interview. “This is really a strategic game changer for how the United States can partner with Israel and our Arab partners in the region to advance security and stability,” she said.  (JNS, June 4, 2023)

“I can tell you that if you ask her what she’s actually opposed to in the reform, she won’t be able to answer.“-– In an interview with radio station Kan Reshet BetForeign Minister Eli Cohen responds to US VP Kamala Harris’ comments.regarding Israel’s judicial reform controversy.  “Under President Joe Biden and our administration, America will continue to stand for the values that have been the bedrock of the U.S.-Israel relationship, which include continuing to strengthen our democracies, which… are both built on strong institutions, checks and balances — and I’ll add an independent judiciary,” she said.  (WIN, June 7, 2023)

“Accusations about Tehran seeking nuclear weapons are a lie and they know it. We do not want nuclear arms because of our religious beliefs. Otherwise, they [the West] would not have been able to stop it.” – Iran’s Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.  (WIN, June 11, 2023)

“The British system seems to be outperforming the American system. In the U.K., immigration and energy policy are matters of debate and decision in Parliament, in the U.S. they are enacted by cunning bureaucracies that misrepresent what they are doing and outfox congressional oversight. Even devolved ministry policies appear to be more representative of public sentiments. The U.K. Department of Education is about to issue rules that generally ban schoolboys who feel they are girls from competing in girls’ sports and using girls’ bathrooms. The U.S. Department of Education has proposed rules to make “trans” sports the norm. If the U.S. rule were a legislative [-proposal, it would be dead on arrival.” — Christopher DeMuth. (WSJ,June 9, 2023)

“ … there isn’t a real journalist in the universe — not a beat reporter or opinion writer or copy editor — who wouldn’t want to read an informant’s account of a sitting president taking a bribe. You can debunk it. You can prove it. But you want to see it. But therein lies the problem. There aren’t many journalists left.” – David Harsanyi.  (Real Clear Politics, June 9, 2023)

“Are you prepared to defend your network, CNN… You can’t put words in my mouth, even though your network can hire Andrew McCabe, who was fired from the FBI for leaking classified documents. Did you remove him from your network? No, you continued to put him on to give judgment against President Trump. You also hired [former National Intelligence DirectorJames] Clapper …  who literally lied to the American public, one of 51 other individuals who had briefings and used it politically to tell the American public that a laptop was Russia collusion, even though it had all this information about the Biden administration, are you prepared to get rid of those people from your network?” – -Speaker Kevin McCarthy answers CNN reporter who asked whether he is prepared to defend Donald Trump and what other actions the House would take on his behalf? (Real Clear Politics,  June 12, 2023)

“Your editorial “Biden’s Trip and Fall: ‘I got Sandbagged’” (June 3) brings to mind Brutus’ description of Caesar in Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar: ‘He hath the falling sickness’ [but] Caesar had a capable heir. . .Octavian, later Emperor Augustus-[Biden has] Kamala Harris.”“No, Mr. President, we are the ones who got sandbagged.” — Alexander Goldstein and Richard LaRue, Letters to the Editor (WSJ, June 9, 2023)

NEW HAREDI IDF CONSCRIPTION BILL TO ADVANCE ‘IMMEDIATELY’ (Jerusalem) — Steps to advance a new IDF conscription bill for Israel’s ultra-orthodox (haredi) citizens will be taken “immediately,” the Shas party said in a statement following a meeting between Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the leaders of the haredi parties on Monday evening. A draft of the bill, which Shas said would “regularize the status of yeshiva [religious academy] students,” is already being prepared by professional bodies, the party said. Shas added that at the directive of its spiritual leadership, the Torah Sages Council, the party’s chairman MK Aryeh Deri held discussions in recent weeks with “all of the bodies” to come up with an “agreed-upon, long-term” law. ABRAHAM ACCORDS ENVOY BILL VOTE POSTPONED, BUT SIGNS OF PROGRESS ON THE HORIZON (Washington) — Tensions between House Republican leadership and conservatives aligned with the Freedom Caucus over the bipartisan debt limit deal upended a scheduled House vote on Monday evening on a bipartisan bill establishing an ambassador-rank special envoy for advancing the Abraham Accords. House business is expected to resume on Tuesday following talks between House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) and conservative critics, and a vote on the envoy bill is expected. The bill is likely to receive broad bipartisan support — and there is movement on the initiative in the Senate and the administration as well. (Jewish Insider, June 13, 2023)

UK LEADERS SLAM ROGER WATERS’S ANTISEMITISM (London) — Ahead of a June 10 concert in Manchester, national and local U.K. politicians distanced themselves from the musician. “The Labour Party stands with the Jewish community and fully condemns Roger Waters,” Labour Party leader Keir Starmer wrote to the Board of Deputies of British Jews. “Many people will think of Roger Waters as famous for being a member of one of the most important bands in history, but he is now more synonymous with spreading deeply troubling antisemitism, and that is why I believe this show should not be allowed to go ahead,” Starmer added. “Views like this should not be given a platform.” (VIN News, June 12, 2023)

GEORGE SOROS HANDS CONTROL OF EMPIRE TO 37-YEAR-OLD SON (NYC)—92-year-old radical-liberal philanthropist George Soros has placed his 37-year-old younger son Alexander, a self-described “center-left” thinker, at the head of his $25 billion empire, including Soros elder’s non-profit Open Society Foundation. “I’m more political” than my father,” the younger Soros said, and although he indicated his concern over decreased freedom of speech on academic campuses, he indicated he would continue his father’s work for progressive causes and election of “reform” district attorneys, through their Democracy super PAC. (WSJ, June 11, 2023)

IRAN EXECUTIONS SURGE AS GOVERNMENT CRACKS DOWN (Tehran) — A surge in executions is putting Iran on course for the highest number of capital punishments in almost a decade. At least 142 people were executed in May, the highest monthly total since 2015, bringing the total to more than 300 in the first five months of this year. Executions are carried out in secret, usually without the accused having access to legal recourse. The figures reflect the theocratic regime’s efforts to stamp out political unrest and crime (most executions are carried out by hanging). (WSJ, June 11, 2023)

SPLC PUTS MOMS ON ITS ‘HATE MAP (Montgomery)—The radical Southern Poverty Law Center has placed “Moms for Liberty”, a non-profit supporting parents’ rights in public education on a “Hate Map” net alongside neoNazis and the KKK as an anti-government extremist hate-group. The authors, members of MFL, note that 2/3 of 1,000 likely voters polled think the K-12 educational system is “on the wrong track”, and an equal percentage favor removing inappropriate sexually-explicit materials from K-12 classrooms. (WSJ, June 11, 2023). [See NY Post, Editorial for more information on Southern Poverty Law Center ad “Moms for Liberty”—Ed.)

CALIFORNIA CAN’T GENERATE ENOUGH POWER TO FUEL ITS ELECTRIC VEHICLE MANDATE, REPORT FINDS (LA) –‘It is past time for the state to reassess its approach for addressing global climate change,’ the Pacific Research Institute report notes.. California will fall well short of the power generation required to fuel its electric vehicle mandate, according to the report reflecting the “seemingly insurmountable hurdles” the state faces in its bid to go green. (Washington Free Beacon, June 12, 2023)

THE GREAT GRIFT: HOW BILLIONS IN COVID-19 RELIEF AID WAS STOLEN OR WASTED (Washington) — Fraudsters used the Social Security numbers of dead people and federal prisoners to get unemployment checks. Cheaters collected those benefits in multiple states. And federal loan applicants weren’t cross-checked against a Treasury Department database that would have raised red flags about sketchy borrowers. Criminals and gangs grabbed the money. But so did a U.S. soldier in Georgia, the pastors of a defunct church in Texas, a former state lawmaker in Missouri and a roofing contractor in Montana. All of it led to the greatest grift in U.S. history, with thieves plundering billions of dollars in federal COVID-19 relief aid intended to combat the worst pandemic in a century and to stabilize an economy in free fall. (VIN News, June 12, 2023)

CANADIANS’ TRUST IN GOVERNMENT AND SCIENCE WANED SINCE COVID: FEDERAL REPORT (Ottawa) — The COVID-19 pandemic has caused Canadians to have an “increased distrust of government and science,” according to a report by the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC). The report, based on questionnaires with 2,088 Canadians and 16 focus groups nationwide, noted that less than one quarter (22 percent) of those surveyed said they were more likely to trust federal agencies since the pandemic. Reviewed by Blacklock’s Reporter, the study said the “increased distrust” toward government spanned across federal, provincial and municipal levels. (Epoch Times, June 11, 2023)

DAVID JOHNSTON RESIGNS AS SPECIAL RAPPORTEUR ON FOREIGN INTERFERENCE (Ottawa) — Former governor general David Johnston will resign from his role as special rapporteur on foreign interference because of the “highly partisan atmosphere” around his appointment. Johnston said that while his objective as special rapporteur was to build trust in Canada’s democratic institutions, in practice, “given the highly partisan atmosphere around my appointment and work, my leadership has had the opposite effect.” Johnston’s appointment was strongly criticized by all opposition parties. Among the concerns cited were his past ties to the Trudeau family and the Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation, as well as his own dealings with Beijing. (Epoch Times, June 9, 2023)

MAJORITY OF CANADIANS WANT FORMAL INQUIRY INTO FOREIGN INTERFERENCE: SURVEY (Ottawa) – The Nanos Research survey, published on June 8, gauged the opinions of 1,096 adult Canadians on their views of Beijing’s interference in Canadian elections and Johnson’s May 23 report in which he did not recommend a public inquiry. The survey found that 59 percent of Canadians said they would prefer having a formal public inquiry headed by a judge with full subpoena powers to probe into foreign interference. A quarter of respondents said they would like the public hearings to “shine more light on the problem of foreign interference and the threat it poses.” (Epoch Times, June 8, 2023)
