Daily Briefing: “Wednesdays NEWS OF THE WEEK IN REVIEW” (May 6,2020)

We’re going to lose anywhere from 75, 80, to 100,000 people. That’s a horrible thing. We shouldn’t lose one person over this,” – said President Donald Trump at a virtual town hall meeting.  Regarding the mitigation and containment measures adopted by his administration, he said, “If we didn’t do it, the minimum we would have lost is a million-two, a million-four, a million-five, that’s the minimum. We would have lost probably higher than—it’s possible higher than 2.2” million.”  (The Epoch Times, May 4, 2020)

“… the mitigation that we put in with the first 15 days and then the 30-day mitigation program of physical distancing worked. So it got us to where we are today. It is a successful formula. It is the basis for our being able to say that we can now think seriously about reopening America,” –  said Dr. Anthony Fauci, a top infectious disease expert and member of the White House coronavirus task force. (The Epoch Times, May 4, 2020)

“My friends, for decades I’ve been fighting those who’ve sought to deny the millennial connection of the Jewish people to our homeland. I’m proud to say that the decades-long struggle has borne fruit. Three months ago, the Trump peace plan recognized Israel’s rights in all of Judea and Samaria, and President Trump pledged to recognize Israel’s sovereignty over the Jewish communities there and in the Jordan Valley. A couple of months from now, I’m confident that that pledge will be honored. We will be able to celebrate another historic moment in the history of Zionism.  A century after San Remo, the promise of Zionism is being realized,” – said Prime Minister Bibi Netanyahu at an online event celebrating 100 years since the San Remo conference.  Includes video on history of the San Remo Conference.  (Algemeiner, Apr. 26, 2020)

“We have not yet reached the moment in which the enemies of Israel are reconciled with the existence of a Jewish state in the land of Israel. Unfortunately, I cannot promise that this will happen in our generation.  Even in these days, the Iranian regime… is working to try and harm the State of Israel and its citizens. Only this I can promise: The State of Israel will never place its security in the hands of others … we have moved from curbing Iran’s establishment in Syria, to pushing it away from there, and we will not stop. We will not allow more strategic threats to grow beyond our borders without taking action. IDF soldiers and their commanders are confident and determined, and with God’s help, we will win,” – said outgoing Defense Minister Naftali Bennett.  (Jerusalem Post, Apr. 28, 2020)

GUSTAVA ROSNER WEINER Z’L

The Canadian Institute for Jewish Research (Montreal and Toronto) notes with sadness the passing of our dear founding Board member Gustava Rosner Weiner.Born in Poland and a Holocaust survivor, and possessed of remarkable intellect and strength of character, after emigrating to Canada she made a successful business career in Montreal and raised her only child, Eric.  She identified with the pro-Israel work of CIJR early on, and gave its Director unstinting, steady, and resourceful support.  A tough and determined enemy of antisemitism in any of its many incarnations, Gustava was a sweet and loving person to those who really knew her.

Her memory is a blessing, and we send Dr . Eric Weiner and family our deepest condolences.
