MEDIA-OCRITIES OF THE WEEK

Afghan Forces Could Face ‘Bad Possible Outcomes’ From US Withdrawal: Top General Emily Jacobs, NY Post, May 3, 2021

The Afghan military, as well as other law-enforcement agencies in the area, are ‘reasonably well-equipped, reasonably well trained, reasonably well led’, Milley noted. ‘The Afghan army, do they stay together and remain a cohesive fighting force, or do they fall apart? I think there is a range of scenarios here, a range of outcomes, a range of possibilities…we have to wait and see how things develop over the summer. There’s a lot of variables to this, and it’s not 100 per cent predictable’. “—General Mark Milley, Chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff. “A’stan fall feared”.

Facebook’s ‘Independent’ Board Stocked With Trump Haters David Marcus, NY Post, May 5, 2021

“What do you get if you cross a former Danish prime minister, someone who once edited the left-wing Guardian newspaper, a Yemeni activist, a bunch of law professors and a Pakistani digital rights activist? The predictable banning of Donald Trump.”  (re Facebook panel’s confirmation of continuing ban on Trump).

Debate Erupts At Rutgers Law School After White Student Quotes Racial SlurTracey Tulley, The Atlanta Journal Constitution, May 3, 2021

“Although we all deplore the use of racial epithets, the idea that a faculty member or law student cannot quote a published court decision that itself quotes racial or otherwise objectionable words as part of the record of the case is problematic and implicates matters of academic and free speech.”—Gary L. Francione, a law professor, commenting on a controversy at Rutgers University Law School, involving a white student repeating a line from a 1993 legal opinion citing the “n-word” epithet in an on-line discussion with a faculty member, and a black student group demanding he apologise for doing so.

                               WEEKLY QUOTES

“A struggle is now being waged for the heart of Jerusalem. It is not a new struggle. It is the struggle between intolerance and tolerance, between law-breaking violence and law and order.  This struggle is not new because it has been waged, in effect, over Jerusalem and the heart of Jerusalem for hundreds of years, since the rise of the three monotheistic faiths.” – Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The Arab rioting in Jerusalem, he said, is part of the organized Palestinian campaign to cancel Jewish presence in the city.  (United With Israel, May 10, 2021)

“Sirens could be heard blaring across the southern and central parts of Israel on and off for hours as the two exchanged rocket-fire. The sound of the outgoing rockets could also be heard in Gaza. As the rockets made their way up in the skies, mosques across the Strip blared with chants of “God is great,” “victory to Islam” and ` “resistance.”  In Holon, a suburb outside of Tel Aviv, a rocket struck a passenger bus. It is unclear how many individuals were on board.” – columnist Emily Jacobs describing Tel Aviv under barrage from 130 rockets launched by Hamas.  (NY Post, May 11, 2021)

“People of Jerusalem, we want you to cut off the heads of the Jews with knives.  With your hand, cut their artery from here. A knife costs five shekels. Buy a knife, sharpen it, put it here and just cut off (their heads). It costs just five shekels. With those five shekels, you will humiliate the Jewish state. You shall find the strongest in enmity towards the believers to be the Jews and the polytheists. The Jews have spread corruption and have acted with arrogance, and their moment of reckoning has come. The moment of their destruction at your hands has arrived.” — senior Hamas Official Fathi Hammad tweeted while the Israeli police struggled to contain the continued Arab rioting. (Twitter, May 10, 2021)

“Jerusalem is being attacked by violent rioters and the terrorist group Hamas.  It is a shame that some on the left are pushing misinformation and anti-Israel propaganda that stokes the flames.  Stop the rockets.  Stop the violence,” – former US Ambassador to the UN Niki Haley.  (FacebookMay 10, 2021)
“Congresswoman @RashidaTlaib maybe you should open your eyes to the whole picture? Islam’s 3rd holiest site is being used to stockpile Molotov cocktails and rocks that are being lobbed at the police and at Jewish worshippers praying at the Western Wall, below the Temple Mount.” — Ambassador Gilad Erdan tweeted in response.  Tlaib had falsely claimed that “people praying [on the Temple Mount] during the holiest days of the holy month of Ramadan have been beaten, gassed, shot, & killed by Israeli forces. They are denied medics & forced to use prayer mats as stretchers.”  (Algemeiner, May 10, 2021)

“The Jihad Squad, @IlhanMN @RashidaTlaib @AOC doesn’t think Israel has the right to defend itself from terrorists Hamas when they fire rockets into Israel,” the Georgia Republican tweeted Monday. “They also support terrorists Antifa/BLM who attack Americans. Members who support terrorism don’t belong in Congress.” — Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga) referred to congressional Democrats known as the “Squad” as the “Jihad Squad” and said they don’t belong in Congress due to their recent defense of Hamas. Rep Ilan Omar, for example, tweeted:  “Israeli air strikes killing civilians in Gaza is an act of terrorism. Palestinians deserve protection. Unlike Israel, missile defense programs, such as Iron Dome, don’t exist to protect Palestinian civilians. It’s unconscionable to not condemn these attacks on the week of Eid.” (Gateway Pundit, May 11, 2021)

“Jerusalem is not a settlement, but the capital of Israel.” – Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to the U.S. official temporarily in charge of the U.S. embassy in Jerusalem, until a new ambassador is appointed, lodged a complaint last month objecting to Israel’s approval for 450 housing units in the Har Homa neighborhood.  (United With Israel, May 7, 2021)

After the Jerusalem Post reported on claims that Fox News host Sean Hannity is anti-Semitic based on a headline in a tweet he posted, the commentator is fighting back – and he’s backed up by the support of several prominent Jewish leaders. Last week, Hannity tweeted an article that referred to far-left Democratic politician Bernie Sanders as “Bolshevik Bernie.” “The trope of Jews being Bolsheviks is a long-standing pattern in anti-Semitic rhetoric,’ the article read, without acknowledging that Sanders has repeatedly expressed admiration for Marxist regimes in Cuba and the former Soviet Union. Hannity demanded an apology from the Post on Twitter, writing that “there is no member of the press in the United States that has been more supportive of the State of Israel than I have been and will continue to be.” (WIN, May 5, 2021)
