ISRAEL’S COVID-19 CASES NEAR 50,000 (Jerusalem) — The number of coronavirus cases in Israel is rapidly approaching 50,000. Some 1,595 people were diagnosed with the virus between Saturday and Sunday, bringing the tally to 49,575 confirmed cases. COVID-19 has so far claimed the lives of 406 Israelis, while 21,440 have recovered from the virus. The ministry noted that 25,033 tests were performed over the weekend, with 8.1 percent coming back with positive results. The number of hospitalized coronavirus patients reached a three-month record of 649 — reminiscent of the heights of the first outbreak in March and April, when 783 Israelis were hospitalized. HEBREW U: DRUG COULD TURN COVID-19 INTO COMMON COLD (Jerusalem) — An FDA-approved treatment for cholesterol could be effective in dramatically easing the symptoms of Covid-19, the Hebrew University of Jerusalem reports. Prof. Yaakov Nahmias, founding director of the Alexander Grass Center for Bioengineering, in collaboration with Dr. Benjamin tenOever of New York’s Mount Sinai Medical Center, has found that the drug Fenofibrate (called Ticor commercially) could inhibit Covid-19’s ability to reproduce in lung cells. In the researchers’ study in the Hebrew University’s MicroTissue Lab, the drug was found to be effective in treating infected human tissue. ISRAEL APPROVES EASTMED PIPELINE DEAL TO TRANSPORT NATURAL GAS TO EUROPE (Jerusalem) — Israel approved a deal on Sunday with Cyprus, Greece and Italy for the EastMed pipeline to transport natural gas to Europe. According to the report, the four countries are scheduled to reach a final decision by 2022 to have the €6 billion ($6.86 billion) pipeline built by 2025. The report says that a land and sea survey is currently underway to determine the route of the 1,900-km (1,200-mile) pipeline. The European Union and IGI Poseidon, which owns the pipeline, each has invested €35 million ($40 million) in the planning stage. The Health Ministry-approved trial of the CorNeat KPro will be run at Beilinson Hospital in Petach Tikva on 10 patients suffering from corneal blindness who are either not candidates for or have experienced one or more failed cornea transplants. The CorNeat KPro implant is designed to replace deformed, scarred or opacified corneas and restore the vision of corneal blind patients immediately following implantation. ISRAELIS TURN ULTRASOUND INTO POWERFUL CANCER-FIGHTING WEAPON (Tel Aviv) — A Tel Aviv-based research team has developed a method to fight cancer by shooting microbubbles at cancer cells and then blowing them up using ultrasound. The microbubbles explode like targeted smart warheads, creating holes in cancer cells’ membranes and enabling gene therapy delivery with tests showing that up to 80 percent of the tumor cells are killed, says Dr. Tali Ilovitsh from the Biomedical Engineering Department at Tel Aviv University. ISRAEL NABS TERRORISTS LINKED TO IRAN, HEZBOLLAH (Jerusalem) –– Israel’s Shin Bet security service said that 10 members of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) terror group were arrested after they were discovered to be planning attacks throughout Israel. The 10 were divided into two terror cells that received funding and training from Iran and the Hezbollah terror group in Lebanon that is armed, funded and trained by Iran. ARI FULD’S KILLER SENTENCED TO LIFE IN PRISON (Jerusalem) — Khalil Jabarin, the terrorist who stabbed Ari Fuld to death south of Jerusalem two years ago, was sentenced to life imprisonment by an IDF court at Ofer Prison, west of Jerusalem. In addition to the life sentence, the court ordered Jabarin pay damages to the Fuld family. IRAN ANNOUNCES EXECUTION OF ‘SPY’ FOR CIA, MOSSAD (Tehran) — The Iranian judiciary announced that Mahmoud Mousavi-Majd had provided the CIA and the Mossad information on the movements of Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’ Quds Force Maj. Gen. Qassem Soleimani, who was assassinated by an American drone in January. The report also said, however, that the judiciary denies Soleimani’s killing was the impetus for Mousavi-Majd’s execution. IRANIAN SPIES ACCIDENTALLY LEAKED VIDEOS OF THEMSELVES HACKING (Tehran) — Researchers at IBM’s X-Force security team revealed that they’ve obtained roughly five hours of video footage that appears to have been recorded directly from the screens of hackers working for a group IBM calls ITG18, and which other security firms refer to as APT35 or Charming Kitten. It’s one of the most active state-sponsored espionage teams linked to the government of Iran. The leaked videos were found among 40 gigabytes of data that the hackers had apparently stolen from victim accounts, including US and Greek military personnel. The civil-forfeiture complaint filed in the District of Columbia federal court alleges the sale was arranged by a businessman, Mahmoud Madanipour, with ties to Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps, a US-designated foreign terrorist organisation. OUTGOING CHIEF OF UNIVERSITY HEADS QUESTIONS REJECTION OF ARIEL U IN SAMARIA (Haifa) –– The outgoing chairman of Israel’s Association of University Heads (VERA), and President of Haifa University, Prof. Ron Theodore Robin, who resigned last week, said in a closed conversation that failing to accept Ariel University into VERA is begging for an explanation. VERA is a voluntary body comprising of the presidents, rectors, and directors-general from Israel’s research universities excluding Ariel University aimed to “promote and to improve the management of aspects of common interest to all the universities.” In 2012, VERA worked unsuccessfully to torpedo the recognition of Ariel University as a fully accredited university. MISSOURI GOVERNOR SIGNS ANTI-BDS BILL INTO LAW (Missouri) — Missouri Gov. Mike Parson signed a bill that requires companies entering into a contract with the state to certify that they are not, and will not, engage in a boycott of Israel. The law, which applies to companies worth over $100,000 with 10 or more employees, comes after pro-Israel lawmakers and advocates tried repeatedly in recent years to pass anti-boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS) movement legislation in the state, but previous attempts have failed in part because of opposition from lawmakers concerned that it violates people’s rights to free speech. The July 18, 1994 attack at the Argentine Israeli Mutual Association (AMIA) building was perpetrated by Hezbollah on behalf of its backer, Iran. Six Senate Democrats including Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders said in a letter last week to Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar that the Trump Administration “acquired its supply of Remdesivir at an exorbitant cost” in a deal that allows Gilead Sciences to reap “windfall revenues” that are paid “by increased premiums for American families.” Their complaint is false.
