Daily Briefing: WEDNESDAY’S “NEWS OF THE WEEK IN REVIEW”

                                 WEEKLY QUOTES
“This is a critical test point for the relations between China and Israel. The Jewish people have a lot in common with the Chinese people. There is no reason for us to hurt each other. If Israel hurts China because of external pressure, it will be making the wrong policy decision.”— Liu Jianchao, the head of the Chinese Communist Party’s international affairs department conveyed this message during a meeting with the Israeli ambassador to China, Irit Ben-Abba. (World Israel News, Aug. 19, 2022)

“As someone who only weeks ago, was directly threatened by an Iranian official, I urge you in the strongest possible terms take the threats of this murderous regime seriously. Don’t let them intimidate you. Do not dismiss them, even for a single second.”– Israel’s Ambassador to Azerbaijan George Deek  in a video posted on Twitter. Deek says that Iran’s Ambassador to Azerbaijan, Abbas Mousavi, had tweeted that the Israeli ambassador had crossed a “red line” and that he would be “buried” by the people of Iran, Deek said. Mousavi’s Twitter account has since been locked and the Tweet is no longer viewable to the public.“Iran also said that he [writer Salman Rushdie] had crossed a red line. Iran also threatened him with death and a terrorist just tried to murder him in broad daylight.” (Algemeiner, Aug. 16, 2022)

“The new proposal asks Iran to sit quietly and not “tell the world” it has nuclear capabilities. For the Iranians, this is neither a plus nor a minus. The deal allows them to retain everything they have achieved thus far. They’ll make it to a nuclear bomb in any case, although we can assume that in the meantime, they’ll prefer to maintain ambiguity and avoid any provocative step that is not necessary to their battle for regional hegemony against Israel.“But experience teaches us that a radical, aggressive power such as Iran cannot be stopped using smiles, bribes, or deals that give us quiet for a time but do not lead to any true change of direction. After all, the forces of evil always aspire to achieve power and show it off, and when it comes to the nuclear question, their reasoning is that only power will ensure their survival and future. The Iranian bomb hasn’t been neutralized, and even if the countdown slows, things will one day come to a head.” – Prof. Eyal Zisser on the immanent Iran deal.  (Israel Hayom, Aug. 21, 2022)

“…To tell the truth, I’ve lost count of how many clashes there have been between Israel and some faction or other in Gaza. Many [Palestinian] factions with various loyalties decide for themselves when to open fire and when to reach an ‘arrangement’ [with Israel], without [consulting] the other factions and for reasons that don’t necessarily have anything to do with Palestine. And the ones who pay the very heavy price of losing their lives or and livelihood are the Palestinian people, whom no one consults about the damage caused to them.”– Al-Nahar Al-Arabi website, Kuwaiti journalist and academic Dr. Muhammad Al-Rumaihi in his column on the Al-Nahar Al-Arabi website (MEMRI, Aug.18, 2022)

“Current universities produce more bad books, bad teaching, bad ideas, and badly educated students, not because the janitors are on strike, the maintenance people can’t fix the toilets, or the landscapers cannot keep the shrubbery alive, but because their academics and administrators have hidden their own incompetence and lack of academic rigor and teaching expertise behind the veil of woke censoriousness.” – Classicist and political analyst Victor Davis Hanson.  (American Greatness, Aug. 21, 2022)

“Any type of election fraud should be addressed. I don’t think we should say there was just a little bit of fraud, so it is OK.”  — Former Acting Homeland Security Secretary Chad Wolf debates the existence of measurable levels of election fraud with CNN’s Jim Acosta. “There is fraud in our election system. If people don’t acknowledge that, that becomes part of the problem,” Wolf said. Acosta replied: “You were the former acting secretary of homeland security and you’re spreading doubt and fear about our election process.” “It is not doubt. These are simple facts,” he said. (Real Clear Politics, Aug. 21, 2022)

“Nothing in the PRA [Presidential Recordings and Materials Preservation Act of 1974] suggests that the former president’s physical custody of his records can be considered unlawful under the statutes on which the Mar-a-Lago warrant is based. Yet the statute’s text makes clear that Congress considered how certain criminal-law provisions would interact with the PRA: It provides that the archivist is not to make materials available to the former president’s designated representative “if that individual has been convicted of a crime relating to the review, retention, removal, or destruction of records of the Archives.”“Nothing is said about the former president himself, but applying these general criminal statutes to him based on his mere possession of records would vitiate the entire carefully balanced PRA statutory scheme. Thus if the Justice Department’s sole complaint is that Mr. Trump had in his possession presidential records he took with him from the White House, he should be in the clear, even if some of those records are classified.” — David B. Rivkin Jr. and Lee A. Casey.  They practice appellate and constitutional law in Washington and served at the Justice Department and the White House Counsel’s Office in the Reagan and George H.W. Bush administrations. (WSJ, Aug. 22, 2022)

“The only conceivable explanation for this action is not to be found in the farrago of nonsense in the deluge of official leaks; it is that the Democratic strategists believe that their only hope for retaining control of the U.S. Senate at the midterms is to shift the conversation from the fiasco of the Biden administration and focus it on the chaos that regularly erupts around Trump, even though that chaos is usually generated by his enemies and not by him.” – historian and political analyst Conrad Black.  (The American Mind, Aug. 22, 2022)

SHORT TAKES

IRAN DROPS DEMAND THAT IRGC BE REMOVED FROM US TERRORISM LIST (Tehran) — A senior Biden administration official revealed that Iran’s response earlier this week to a draft nuclear agreement proposed by the EU made no mention of Tehran’s previously firm position on the IRGC. Another source told CNN that while a deal was “closer than it was two weeks ago, the outcome [is] uncertain as some gaps remain. [U.S.] President [Joe] Biden will only approve a deal that meets our national security interests.”  (WIN, Aug. 21, 2022)

PACKED ISRAELI BUS IN SAMARIA TARGETED BY GUNFIRE FROM PALESTINIAN VILLAGE (Judea and Samaria)–Suspected Palestinian terrorists fired on a crowded Israeli bus in Judea and Samaria shortly after another incident in which three Arab women in possession of a submachine gun and a suicide note were arrested at a checkpoint. The bus was traveling along the north-south Route 60 highway when it was fired upon from the Palestinian village of Silwad, which is located near the Jewish community of Ofra. No casualties were reported. (United With Israel, Aug. 21, 2022)

LOOK WHO’S INTERFERING IN THE KNESSET ELECTIONS TO BLOCK A NETANYAHU VICTORY (Ramallah) — The only thing surprising about Friday night’s Channel 12 revelation that the Palestinian Authority is attempting to influence the outcome of the upcoming Knesset elections was that it was reported as a big scoop. It’s by no means the first time that the PA has tried to meddle in election cycles in the Jewish state. Nor was it a shock to learn about Israel Security Agency (Shin Bet) fears that Iran and Russia are colluding to sway the results of the Nov. 1 vote, mainly through the use of targeted, algorithm-driven mind-control methods on social media. (WIN, Aug. 21, 2022)

ISLAMIC JIHAD PLANNED TO INFILTRATE ISRAEL THROUGH TUNNELS FROM GAZA (Gaza Strip) — Palestinian Islamic Jihad was preparing to carry out operations that included infiltrating into Israeli territory during Operation Breaking Dawn. The terrorists in the field refused to enter the tunnels. Why? Possibly because of what happened during Operation Guardian of the Walls in May of last year when the IDF showed that it was able to directly hit tunnels that were dug at a depth of 20-30 meters while there are terrorists in them. (Jerusalem Post, Aug. 18. 2022)

PALESTINIAN TEEN KILLED AS RIOTERS ATTACK JEWISH PILGRIMAGE TO JOSEPH’S TOMB (Nablus) — Wassim Khalifa, 19, was killed as heavy clashes broke out in Nablus while Jewish worshippers held a monthly pilgrimage to a shrine in the Palestinian West Bank city under military guard. It was the first trip to the shrine since late June, when Palestinian gunmen opened fire on pilgrims, wounding a senior Israel Defense Forces officer and two civilians. (Times of Israel, Aug. 18, 2022)

BEN & JERRY’S BLOCKED FROM DISCRIMINATING AGAINST JEWS IN JUDEA AND SAMARIA (Judea and Samaria) — The attempt by ice-cream maker Ben & Jerry’s to stop sales of its products in Judea and Samaria was rejected by a federal judge. Ben & Jerry’s brought the lawsuit on July 5 against its parent company Unilever after the latter announced it would sell the rights to produce its dessert products in Israel to American Quality Products Ltd. Owned by Israeli businessman Avi Zinger, American Quality Products has produced and delivered Ben & Jerry’s products in Israel for decades. In the lawsuit, the Ben & Jerry’s board argued that the transfer breached a deal between them and Unilever because it circumvented the ice-cream company’s decision to end sales in what it considers “occupied Palestinian territory.” (United With Israel, Aug. 23, 22022)

ISRAELI-LED STUDY IDENTIFIES VIRUSES THAT KILL ‘BAD’ BACTERIA LINKED TO CROHN’S DISEASE (Tel Aviv) — Many of the microbes that live in our gut are good for our health, while others contribute to inflammatory bowel disease or other disorders. Until now, it hasn’t been possible to target “bad” bacteria without harming the surrounding “good” bacteria. Now, in an international study published in Cell, Israeli researchers say common viruses called bacteriophages can specifically kill gut bacteria associated with inflammatory bowel disease. “There are thousands of different phages, and their big advantage is that each of them specializes in attacking a different type of bacteria,” explained Prof. Eran Elinav of Israel’s Weizmann Institute of Science, who headed the team. (United With Israel, Aug. 16, 2022)

‘SHTISEL’ CO-CREATOR HELMS BIOGRAPHICAL MINI-SERIES ABOUT FOUNDER OF ZIONISM THEODOR HERZL (Jerusalem) — A biographical mini-series about Jewish journalist, playwright and founder of Zionism Theodor Herzl is in the early stages of development and is being led by the co-creator and writer of the popular Israeli television series “Shtisel.” The series will reportedly be based on Herzl’s personal diaries and will follow his journey from becoming a playwright to founding the Zionist movement. “Shtisel” visionary Ori Elon, who also wrote the Israeli television series “Srugim,” has partnered on the project with Inbar Nacht, who is financing the show’s script.  (Algemeiner, Aug. 18, 2022)

GERMAN LEADER CONDEMNS ABBAS’ ’50 HOLOCAUSTS’ REMARK (Berlin) — German Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s statement on Twitter came a day after Abbas refused to condemn a deadly attack by Palestinian militants on Israeli athletes at the 1972 Munich Olympics. Instead, Abbas countered by saying he could point to “50 Holocausts” by Israel. “I am disgusted by the outrageous remarks made by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas,” Scholz said. “For us Germans in particular, any relativization of the singularity of the Holocaust is intolerable and unacceptable. I condemn any attempt to deny the crimes of the Holocaust.” Scholz was criticized in Germany and Israel for not rejecting Abbas’ comments immediately at the press conference he held with him at the Chancellery. (ABC News, Aug. 17, 2022)

U.S. SENATOR CALLS ON MEDIA TO HOLD ROGER WATERS CULPABLE FOR ANTISEMITISM (Washington) — Florida’s Republican Sen. Marco Rubio went on an all-around attack on Pink Floyd co-founder and longtime anti-Israel activist Roger Waters ahead of his tour of Rubio’s state. Writing in an op-ed for The Floridian, Rubio called Waters out for his recent statements against United States’ assistance to Ukraine in its war against an invasion by Russia and denied that China is committing acts of genocide against its Uyghur population. Rubio pointed out the musician’s years of “unjustified hatred” for Israel, having referred to the Jewish state as an “apartheid state” and a construction of a “settler-colonialist cabal.” (United With Israel, Aug. 18, 2022)

CANADA ENDS ANTI-RACISM PROGRAM WITH ADVISER WHO SAID ZIONISTS ARE ‘HUMAN FECES’ (Ottawa) — After a Canadian government scandal in which an anti-racism program’s adviser was found to have made violent and derogatory remarks about Israelis, Americans and French Canadians, the Canadian Housing and Diversity and Inclusion Ministry announced that it has suspended the program and cut funding to the adviser’s firm. The Community Media Advocacy Centre (CMAC) had been funded by Heritage Canada’s Anti-Racism Action Program to work on projects promoting minorities in Canadian media. One of CMAC’s senior advisers and project leaders, Laith Marouf, was revealed by Canadian journalist Jonathan Kay to have made controversial comments such as wishing for American military deaths and for Israelis to be expelled from Israel. (Jerusalem Post, Aug. 23, 2022)

BIDEN WHITE HOUSE FACILITATED DOJ’S CRIMINAL PROBE AGAINST TRUMP, SCUTTLED PRIVILEGE CLAIMS: MEMOS (Washington) — Long before it professed no prior knowledge of the raid on Donald Trump’s estate, the Biden White House worked directly with the Justice Department and National Archives to instigate the criminal probe into alleged mishandling of documents, allowing the FBI to review evidence retrieved from Mar-a-Lago this spring and eliminating the 45th president’s claims to executive privilege, according to contemporaneous government documents reviewed by Just the News. The memos show then-White House Deputy Counsel Jonathan Su was engaged in conversations with the FBI, DOJ and National Archives as early as April, shortly after 15 boxes of classified and other materials were voluntarily returned to the federal historical agency from Trump’s Florida home. By May, Su conveyed to the Archives that President Joe Biden would not object to waiving his predecessor’s claims to executive privilege, a decision that opened the door for DOJ to get a grand jury to issue a subpoena compelling Trump to turn over any remaining materials he possessed from his presidency. (Just the News, Aug. 23, 2022)

DAUGHTER OF ‘PUTIN’S BRAIN’ KILLED IN CAR BOMB EXPLOSION, UKRAINIANS BLAMED (Moscow) – The daughter of Alexander Dugin, a nationalist ideologist who is often referred to as “Putin’s brain” was killed when her car exploded on the outskirts of Moscow. The Investigative Committee branch for the Moscow region said the Saturday night blast was caused by a bomb planted in the SUV driven by Daria Dugina, 29. (WIN, Aug. 29, 2022)

AGREEMENT WAS REACHED FOR CONVOY PROTESTERS TO REPOSITION VEHICLES BEFORE EMERGENCIES ACT WAS INVOKED, NEGOTIATOR SAYS (Ottawa) — Dean French, who negotiated with leaders of the Freedom Convoy earlier this year, said the Liberal government didn’t give enough time for a peaceful resolution to transpire before invoking the Emergencies Act to have the protesters removed by force, even though an agreement for the convoy to leave was reached. The public hearings part of the inquiry are set to take place next month to look into the unprecedented use of the Emergencies Act, invoked by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Feb. 14, to clear the demonstrations in downtown Ottawa that began late January and called for an end to federal COVID-19 vaccine mandates and restrictions.
