Daily Briefing: HAS HAMAS REACHED A TURNING POINT?

HUGE GAIN

Confirmed: Gaza’s Hamas #2, Mohammed Deif is Dead:  Hana Levi Julian, Jewish Press, July 21, 2024 — After seven failed assassination attempts, the Israel Defense Forces have confirmed that Mohammed Deif, head of Gaza’s Hamas military wing — Al Qassam — has been eliminated, killed in an Israeli airstrike eight days ago. Deif was the Number 2 leader in Gaza’s Hamas terrorist organization, second only to the group’s leader, Yahya Sinwar.

Hamas Has Reached a Turning Point:  Tamir Hayman, INSS, July 17, 2024 — Israel isn’t on the way to a “total victory,” which will not happen after October 7. We have not yet destroyed Hamas, nor have we completely defeated it, and we still have 120 hostages being held in the Gaza Strip. At the same time, an entire region of our country is still abandoned and being shelled in the north. The better news is that Hamas seems to have reached a turning point.

Sinwar Personally Sent Clandestine Message to Israel Weeks Before Oct. 7 – TV Report TOI staff, Times of Israel, July 21, 2024 — Hamas’s Gaza chief Yahya Sinwar personally sent a clandestine message to Israel a few weeks before he launched the terror group’s October 7 slaughter in southern Israel, warning it ambiguously to expect a flare-up tied to Palestinians in Israeli prisons and on the issue of captives, according to an Israeli television report Sunday.

The Attack in Yemen: The Message to the US is More Important than the Message to Iran:  Yoel Guzansky, Ilan Zalayat, INSS, July 21, 2024 — The significance of the attack carried out yesterday by the Air Force in the area of the Hodeidah Port in Yemen will not, as Israeli spokespersons said, cut off the smuggling route from Iran to the Houthis.

The Triumph of the Houthis (and Iran) Editorial  Board, WSJ, July 21, 2024 — The bombing exchange between the Houthis of Yemen and Israel over the weekend isn’t merely another military escalation in the Middle East. It represents the failure of the Biden Administration’s policy of appeasement to contain the Iran-backed Houthis as they terrorize commercial shipping in the Red Sea, Israel and the U.S. Navy.
