Daily Briefing: ARE THE HOSTAGES REDEEMABLE?

SHABBAT READING

Power from the Outside or Self-Restraint from Within:  Shoftim 5771, 5784 – The Rabbi Sacks Legacy — This summer, we’ve seen riots on the streets of London and Manchester on the one hand, Tripoli on the other. On the face of it there was nothing in common between them. In London the rioters were holding rocks. In Tripoli they were holding machine guns. In Libya they were rioting to remove a tyrant. In London they were rioting for clothes and flatscreen televisions. There was only one thing in common, namely that there were riots. They reminded us, as John Maynard Keynes once said, that civilisation is a thin and precarious crust. It can crumble easily and quickly.

Sinwar’s Secret Plan to ‘Smuggle Hostages to Iran’:  Elon Perry, Jewish Chronicle, Sept. 5, 2024 — During a 15-minute press conference for the foreign media in Jerusalem last night, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu astounded the audience by claiming that Hamas was planning to smuggle hostages out of Gaza using the much-disputed Philadelphi corridor.

Crush Hamas or Free Hostages? I Choose the Hostages Yossi Klein Halevi, Times of Israel, Sept. 5, 2024 — When the immediacy of the horrors of October 7 begins to fade, the trauma that will linger in the Israeli psyche is the shattering of two core assumptions about our country.

Iran’s Gaza War: Unfortunately, A Ceasefire Deal Will Not Bring the Hostages Back John Richardson, Gatestone Institute, Sept. 2, 2024 —  The murder of six more Israeli hostages — Hersh Goldberg-Polin, Carmel Gat, Eden Yerushalmi, Alexander Lobanov, Almog Sarusi and Ori Danino — captured by the terrorist group Hamas appears to be leading many Israelis, along with most of their ever-gullible media (remember the Oslo Accords?) to think that if only their government would agree to a ceasefire, they would get their hostages back.

The Biden–Harris DOJ’s Embarrassingly Unserious Criminal Complaint against Hamas Andrew C. McCarthy, National Review, Sept. 4, 2024 — Last night, we published my post on the Biden–Harris Justice Department’s criminal complaint against Hamas — which is to say, the Harris presidential-campaign document in which they hope you don’t notice that there is about as much chance that the living “defendants” will ever see the inside of an American courtroom as there is that United States prosecutors will try Ismael Haniyeh — the dead guy who is named as the lead defendant in the case.
