The Origins of Tefillin: Dr. Yehudah Cohn, The Torah.com, Aug. 24, 2016 — Why did the practice of tefillin come into being? The first and second paragraphs of the Shema prayer, found in the Torah readings of Va’ethanan and Eikev respectively, may appear to resolve the issue, ostensibly ordaining the practice of head and arm tefillin. I will try to show that the question of tefillin’s origin is far from trivial, and hope to provide a more complex answer below
