CIJR 26th Annual Gala: Montreal, June 10, 2014

Former Israeli Air Force Commander in Chief to speak at CIJR Gala

Event held to honour Canadian WWII veterans who fought in Israeli War of Independence

MONTREAL, June 10th, 2014— Former Israeli Air Force Commander in Chief General Eitan Ben-Eliahu will headline the Canadian Institute for Jewish Research’s 26th annual Gala, set to take place on Tuesday, June 10th, at the Congregation Shaar Hashomayim.

In addition to General Ben-Eliyahu’s special appearance, the event will honour Canadian war veterans, both Jewish and non-Jewish, who fought to defend the newly established State of Israel in 1948. Montrealler, Dr. William Novick, a WWII pilot, will be on hand to accept the honor on behalf of all foreign volunteer Israeli soldiers, known as the “Mahal”.

Mahal members, of who many had just returned from fighting in World War II, chose to once again risk their lives to defend the Jewish state out of a belief in the necessity of defending the fledgling Israeli State.

Born and raised in Jerusalem, Eitan Ben-Eliahu served in the Israeli Air Force (IAF) for 38 years, and was the IAF’s Commander in Chief (1996-2000). Ben-Eliahu was involved in some of the IAF’s most important operations as Squadron Commander of a group of F-4 Phantoms in the Yom Kippur War and as a fighter pilot in the 1981 mission to destroy Iraq’s Osirak nuclear reactor. Ben-Eliahu is a leading analyst and commentator on regional and international defense and security issues.

General Ben-Eliyahu will deliver a fascinating overview of Middle East geopolitics from the point of view of someone only with his career experience may offer.

DATE: Tuesday, June 10, 2014

TIME: Cocktails 5:30 p.m. – Dinner 7:00 p.m.

PLACE: Congregation Shaar Hashomayim – 450 Kensington Avenue, Westmount, Montreal
