SHABBAT READING
The Covenant of the Pieces: A Promise for All Generations?: Dr. Rabbi Zvi Grumet, The Torah.com, Nov. 7, 2024 — In Genesis, God establishes two covenants with Abraham. The first is Berit Bein ha-Betarim, “the Covenant of the Pieces” (Gen 15), and the second is Berit Mila, “the Covenant of Circumcision” (Gen 17). Although only a single chapter separates the two, there is at least a fourteen-year gap between them,[1] and they are very different from each other. The Covenant of Circumcision requires Abraham and all future descendants to circumcize all males of the community. In turn, God promises to make Abraham the progenitor of many nations and to be the God of Abraham’s descendants. This is לְדֹרֹתָם לִבְרִית עוֹלָם, “an everlasting covenant throughout the ages” (Gen 17:7).
