WEDNESDAY’S “NEWS OF THE WEEK IN REVIEW

MEDIA-OCRITIES OF THE WEEK
Amid Israeli Blockade on Gaza, a Fishing Fleet Limps Along: Raja Abdulrahim, NY Times, Nov. 27, 2022

‘… For Gaza’s fishermen, the negative effect of the blockade is multifold. In addition to the limits on goods coming in, the naval blockade restricts how far out into the Mediterranean Sea fishermen can go and thus how much and the type of fish they are able to catch. Fishermen are at risk of being shot at by the Israeli coast guard and being detained or having their boats confiscated by Israel if they get too close to the boundaries of the permitted fishing areas. There have been more than 300 shooting episodes this year, according to the United Nations, with 14 fishermen injured. At least 47 have been detained by Israel. …With little relief from the blockade, Gaza’s boats limp along, kept semi-functioning by a combination of salvaged used parts from other vessels, modified car and truck parts that are not made to be in the salty sea, and occasionally smuggled items.”  [Missing from the article is that terrorists “use the fishermen population to smuggle weapons and equipment.” Also, the IDF “allows fishermen to make a living from fishing in the permitted areas near the Gaza Strip without limitation, and does not act against those who do not violate the maritime security restrictions.” See:  New York Times Gaza Fish Tale Has “Important Details Missing,” Israeli Army Says – Ed.]

The Impeachment of Philadelphia’s DA is Misguided and a Bad PrecedentEditorial Board, Washington Post, Nov. 23, 2022

[Impeachment of ‘woke’ Philadelphia D.A. Larry Krasner”] is an affront to local control and democratic choice. If successful it would set a dangerous precedent. . . Mr. Krasner is part of a wave of prosecutors elected in recent years who have pushed communities to move away from indiscriminate application of long sentences and toward policies that seek to divert nonviolent offenders from the criminal justice system to drug treatment, mental health care, or other programs. . . These progressive prosecutors have faced pushback from conservatives and traditional law enforcement officials who allege policies such as no cash bail or not trying juveniles as adults have caused the surge in violent crime since the start of the pandemic in 2020. It is too soon to conclude that there is a linkage between progressive reforms and spikes in crime. …”  [See:  Philadelphia Police Department:  Crime Maps & Stats  and  Homicides and overall violent crime are up in Philadelphia – “It’s shaping up to be another grim year for Philadelphia, which is on pace to eclipse last year’s homicide record. The big picturePhilly is bucking a national trend captured in a midyear survey of large law enforcement agencies by the Major Cities Chiefs Associations, which shows that homicides are dropping in most major U.S. cities, but total violent crime is on the rise.” – Ed.]

WEEKLY QUOTES

Trump “was wrong to give a white nationalist, an antisemite and a Holocaust denier, a seat at the table, and I think he should apologize for it and he should denounce those individuals and their hateful rhetoric without qualification. … I don’t believe he’s a racist or a bigot. I would not have been his Vice President if he was,” he stated. “People often forget that the President’s daughter converted to Judaism, his son-in-law is a devout Jew, his grandchildren are Jewish. I think the President demonstrated profoundly poor judgement, …  he should denounce them without qualification.” – former US VP Mike Pence.  (Israel National News, Nov. 29, 2022)

“A former President does not enjoy the luxury of meeting over dinner with any oddball, especially when that fool is a self-declared hater. It was wrong for former President Obama to affiliate with the Rev. Jeremiah Wright and Louis Farrakhan. It is wrong for President Biden to praise Jew-hater Rashida Tlaib and fail to exert his leadership to rein in the Jew-hatred of Ilhan Omar. And it is wrong when President Trump breaks bread with such individuals.” – Coalition for Jewish Values (CJV)Vice President Rabbi Dov Fischer. The CJV, which represents over 2000 prominent Orthodox Jewish rabbis called on former President Donald Trump to denounce antisemitic political activist Nick Fuentes and rapper Kanye West, after hosting them for dinner at his Florida home. (WIN, Nov. 29, 2022)

“During the election campaign, I said that I recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, and today, as the leader of the opposition, the leader of the Conservative Party and a sitting member of parliament, I once again say clearly and unequivocally – Jerusalem is the capital of Israel, and when I am elected Prime Minister of Canada, I will see to it that the embassy is moved from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.”  — Canadian Conservative opposition leader Pierre Poilievre to Chaim Silberstein, founder and chairman of the “Keep Jerusalem” NGO, and Ran Ishay, head of KJ’s Jerusalem Center for Applied Policy.  (WIN, Nov. 28, 2022)

“We will definitely turn this huge sedition scene, and this world war, into a burial ground for the policies of America and its allies.” — Maj. Gen. Hossein Salami, commander-in-chief of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps, threatening protesters in Sistan-Baluchistan, capital of Zahedan, alleging they were being manipulated by foreign powers. (At least 440 people, including 60 children, have died in clashes with security forces.). (WSJ, Nov. 27, 202.)

“I read Andy Kessler’s “My Attempt at Tuning Out the World(Inside View, Nov. 21) with much curiosity. Thousands of years ago, Moses taught the Jewish people the Ten Commandments, and ever since we have tuned out the world on our weekly Sabbath. I can’t tell you what a blessing this is. Sabbath observers know that restrictions on our modern gadgets bring us freedom to engage in all the other things we can do: Talk with each other face to face, go for an uninterrupted walk, read, study and simply enjoy quiet and peace. There is no chance of interruption on the Sabbath—no beeps, buzzes, flashes, dings and pings. There are no demands except that we enjoy the wonderful gifts of life that God gives us daily, if only we are willing to tune out our self-created distractions and tune into His blessings.” – David Bendory.  (WSJ, Nov. 23, 2022)

“T]he fancy colleges. . .teach you a language of criticism and deconstruction, a language that encourages you to think of yourself as oppressed. . . First of all, you are not oppressed. To use that word in reference to yourself [as an American college student is to announce to the world that you utterly lack perspective. Most of the world would trade places with you in an instant.” — Eboo Patel, founder and president of Interfaith America.  (NY Post, Nov. 23, 2022)

“I get asked ‘Who is the most dangerous person in the world?’ The most dangerous person in the world is Randi Weingarten [President of the American Federation of Teachers]. It’s not a close call…[It’s] the teacher’s unions, and the filth that they’re teaching our kids. … If our kids don’t grow up understanding America is an exceptional nation, we’re done. It they think it’s an oppressor class, if they think the 1619 Project, and we were founded on a racist idea– if those are the things people entered the seventh grade deeply embedded in their understanding of America, it’s difficult to understand how Xi Jinping’s claim that America is in decline won’t prove true.” — Mike Pompeo, former Secretary of State.  (WSJ, Nov. 22, 2022)

“… exactly when did the FBI learn Steele’s near-only source was bogus? When did they learn Dolan was the originator of the pee tape? Why did they not conclude the investigation at that point? How high up the FBI chain of command did knowledge of the lackadaisical sourcing by Steele go? …The FBI was actively investigating the President of the United States as a Russian spy and Comey was not aware of the details? … why was Steele himself never charged with anything? … Why didn’t Durham walk his indictments up the ladder? … Why didn’t Durham use the stage of congressional hearings to bypass Joe Biden’s Justice Department and throw the real decision making back to the voters?” – Peter van Buren on questions that Special prosecutor John Durham didn’t answer, and apparently won’t.  (The American Conservative,Nov. 28, 2022)

ANTI-JEWISH DISCRIMINATION PERPETRATED BY 25 PERCENT OF US HIRING MANAGERS (San Francisco) — In light of recent high-profile cases of antisemitism in the U.S., ResumeBuilder.com polled 1,131 recruiters. Twenty-three percent say they want fewer Jews in their industry, while 17% add that managers have told them to avoid hiring Jews. The top reason for discriminating against Jews, the results show, is a supposed fear of their “power and control,” with 38% of hiring managers citing that excuse. Recruiters also justified discrimination by claiming that Jews consider themselves the “chosen people” and they have too much wealth, in addition to listing that “Jews are greedy,” “Jews killed Jesus,” “Jews are an inferior race,” “Jews are oppressors” and “Jews are less capable.” (United With Israel, Nov. 28, 2022)
